At Of Curious Nature, we create Yooper-themed, all-natural soy candles handcrafted in small batches in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Each candle is inspired by popular Yooper sayings, expressions, places, and apparel, designed to evoke cherished memories of life and times in the Yoop.
Our sense of smell is directly linked to memory more than any other sense. It was with this idea in mind that Of Curious Nature Candles was born. Whether you've crossed the Mighty Mac into God's Country, swatted a skeeter the size of a small bird, or seen the northern lights from the shores of Gitche Gumee, our candles aim to transport you to those treasured moments.

My candles and wax melts are hand-poured in very small batches right here in my home workshop. I use 100% all-natural soy wax and "clean scent" fragrance oils that are free of carcinogens, mutagens, and toxins—because what you breathe matters. The wicks are made from all-natural ring-spun cotton, with no zinc, lead, or any other metals. Each candle burns for approximately 30 hours, giving you plenty of time to soak in the cozy ambiance.
The Spark That Started It All
Back in 2020, the idea for a Yooper-themed candle line flickered to life. I wanted to create something that truly captured the spirit of the U.P.—not just in name but in scent. Instead of simply labeling a candle with its fragrance, I decided each one would have a name, a tagline, and a scent designed to match a real Yooper experience.
To get it just right, I brainstormed, researched, made endless lists, and talked with fellow Yoopers. Then came the hands-on part—testing waxes, fragrance oils, and wicks. Not just for the perfect scent, but also for safety and quality.
The result? Candles that bring memories rushing back with just one sniff! I love watching someone pick up a candle, take a whiff, and suddenly break into a smile—“How’d you do that? This smells just like…” a sauna, or trekking through the woods to camp. That’s exactly what I set out to do—to create candles that transport you back to your favorite Yooper moments in an instant.
Bringing Yooper Memories to Life
My hope is that my candles help you relive your U.P. experiences or share those memories with others. Whether you’re gifting a piece of the U.P. to a friend or keeping a little slice of home for yourself, these candles are more than just scents—they’re stories in a tin.
I continue to hand-pour my candles from my home workshop in the woods, and I’m thrilled to see them making their way out into the world. In 2021, I launched my Etsy shop, started attending local craft fairs, and even landed my candles in Michigan Made stores in Manistique, Houghton, and Marquette.
